Have questions about red and near-infrared light therapy?

You're in the right place. Below you'll find answers to the most common questions about how it works, the benefits, and how to use our LED therapy devices safely and effectively. Feel free to reach out if you don’t see your question here—we’re always happy to help.

What is Red Light Therapy?

Red light therapy (RLT) is a natural treatment method for healing and enhanced wellness. NASA discovered it and verified it through numerous clinical research trials.
Therapy involves exposing the body to specific wavelengths of light, which penetrate the skin to stimulate cellular function. This process is non-invasive and painless and has been shown to enhance circulation, reduce inflammation, and promote healing by boosting mitochondrial activity.

How does Red Light Therapy work?

Mitochondria are tiny organelles found inside our cells. They are referred to as the “powerhouse of the cell” because they are responsible for producing cellular fuel known as adenosine triphosphate (ATP).

Sometimes, mitochondria cannot produce enough ATP due to illness, injury, aging, lifestyle, etc. They can then stop functioning effectively, reduce their ability to repair and regenerate themselves, and struggle to survive—this is called Mitochondrial Dysfunction.
RLT initiates a reaction with light-sensitive molecules, which are particularly responsive to red and near-infrared light photons, that starts the process of cellular healing. The mitochondria are excited, stimulating ATP production, and the energised cells then perform and repair themselves much more efficiently.

What’s the difference between red and near-infrared light therapy?

The term “Red Light Therapy” refers to the use of red wavelengths of light from 620 to 660nm or near infrared (NIR) wavelengths from 810 to 850nm or both.
Red wavelengths are absorbed into the outer layers of the skin, while NIR wavelengths can penetrate deeper into the body, including joints and bones.
“Infrared Light Therapy” typically refers to near-infrared wavelengths in the low 800 nm range.

Longer infrared wavelengths, such as those found in infrared saunas, should be used with caution, since overuse can potentially cause thermal damage to sensitive cells in the eye and testicles. Shorter NIR wavelengths delivered by a non-thermal LED light do not have a significant heating effect on the cells, which makes near-infrared light treatment much safer.

What are the benefits of using Red Light Therapy?

Benefits include improved skin health and rejuvenation, reduced inflammation, accelerated muscle recovery, reduced joint pain, improved blood circulation, accelerated wound healing, weight loss, enhanced mood, better sleep quality, hair growth and increased collagen production.

Is Red Light Therapy safe for everyone?

Red light therapy is safe to use because it is non-invasive and does not generate heat in the cells. Red and near-infrared light photons have clinically proven positive effects on the body’s tissues, and no adverse side effects have been reported. It does not emit harmful UV light and you will not get a tan from using RLT. While considered safe, individuals who are pregnant, have photosensitivity disorders, or are on photosensitizing medications should consult a healthcare provider before undergoing therapy.

How often should I use Red Light Therapy for optimal results?

For best outcomes, it's recommended to undergo daily sessions or at the very least 3-5 times per week. Consistency is key to achieving and maintaining benefits.

Can Red Light Therapy help with sleep issues?

Yes, red light therapy can improve sleep quality by increasing melatonin production, which helps regulate the sleep-wake cycle.

What should I wear during a therapy session?

To maximise exposure and even penetration, it's advisable to wear minimal clothing or garments that allow the light to reach the targeted areas. Red Light does not penetrate well through clothing. Protective eyewear should be worn if using on your face.

Are there any side effects associated with infrared light therapy?

Scientists have found that red light therapy is free of side effects when used as directed, including using protective eyewear and not overdoing the treatment times. Side effects are rare but may include temporary redness or tightness of the skin. It's important to follow our recommended guidelines and consult with professionals if concerns arise.

What are the benefits of red and near-infrared light therapy?

Red and near-infrared light therapy can help improve skin tone, reduce acne and wrinkles, enhance muscle recovery, alleviate joint pain, boost circulation, and support better sleep and mood.

How often should I use red light therapy?

For general wellness, 3–5 weekly sessions, each lasting 10–20 minutes, are recommended. Daily sessions may be beneficial initially for specific issues like pain or inflammation.

How long does Red Light Therapy take to work?

It does vary from individual to individual; for example, some people receive an immediate effect in pain and inflammation reduction, while others take more time. As beneficial as RLT is, it should not be considered a miracle treatment for any condition. Whether benefits are skin-deep or deeper in the body, they often take time to manifest because RLT works at the cellular level. Cells need time to repair themselves or replicate, and for the effects of millions of cells working together to result in improvement.

Consistency is key to seeing results. You may see some results very quickly, but the full effects may not be visible for three to six months of daily use. Once you’ve achieved the desired results, you can continue with less frequent treatments to maintain your results.

Can I use red light therapy every day?

Yes, daily use is safe and can accelerate results, especially for pain relief or recovery.

What should I wear during a red light therapy session?

The more skin exposed, the better the results. You can wear underwear, swimwear, or nothing at all—whatever makes you comfortable.

Can children use red light therapy?

Yes, but it's best to consult a healthcare professional first. If approved, ensure an adult supervises sessions.

Can I use red light therapy inside an infrared sauna?

It's not recommended to use red light panels inside an infrared sauna, as the heat and sweat can reduce the therapy's effectiveness and damage the lights.
